I read this book the summer that two men asked me to marry them--the summer of 2009. It was not a good year for me. I happened to pull this book off of my local library's shelf while searching for something--anything--that might give me an answer. I'd read the Atwood standards in university literature classes (Surfacing, The Handmaid's Tale, etc.), but I'd never even heard of this one. I sat inside my basement apartment, and I read the whole thing in one go.It was a literary cure. I'd highly recommend it for anyone who feels they're trapped if they get married and trapped if they don't.Since it was written by Atwood when she was just 24, it's a young voice speaking here. Young and melodramatic, yes, but already incredibly talented. It's a must for any Atwood fan.Also, I didn't marry either of the men. I left the country instead and have never looked back.
